Beaverbrook Tree Inventory Course
Do you love Beaverbrook's trees and are interested in their well-being? Consider volunteering with NeighbourWoods in Beaverbrook, a community forest stewardship project.
Join the Beaverbrook two-day tree inventory training session on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4, 2023, 9 AM to 4 PM (both days), organized by the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association (KBCA).
Developed by University of Toronto Forestry professors, the NeighbourWoods© training is for anyone interested in Beaverbrook’s valuable natural resource: our trees. You will learn how to identify tree species and assess a tree’s health and condition. After the course, you will join a team of volunteers to inventory trees on Beaverbrook Streets. Data from the inventory will be used to assess existing trees' health and support decisions about future needs.

150 & 180 Kanata Avenue - Developments backing on to Bill Teron Park
- Details
Two developers are applying to develop 150 and 180 Kanata Avenue. These are important projects for Kanata North as their backyard is the Bill Teron Park (formerly Kanata Central Park)
These are located on the west verge of Kanata Avenue, which will remove some of the trees (which will be replaced) and be located below the escarpment which is part of the Bill Teron Park. The locations of these developments have been planned for some time, appearing in the original plan for a new Kanata Town Centre prior to the City of Ottawa amalgamation.
There will be back to back Zoom presentations on Monday, Mar 7 at 7 PM (180 Kanata Ave) [Zoom link] and 8:30 PM (150 Kanata Ave) [Zoom link]
For more understanding of the vision/plan for Bill Teron Park and how these buildings fit in see:

100 Varley (Weeping Willow Lane) development application
- Details
Update (18Feb2022):
- added Comments - part 3 - cleaned up building repositioning/redesign proposal
- Comment by KBCA
- Background document - Understanding the City devapp process as applies to 100 Weeping Willow Lane
Original Post:
A new development application has been made for a 10 storey apt. building on Varley by the new owners of the Varley Apts (previously Taggart, now Homestead Land Holdings – a very large apt management co.) to update the zoning change by Taggart in 2014 (for a 7 storey addition) for additional re-zoning to a 10 storey building as illustrated, below:
The KBCA has requested a public meeting, but in the absence of Kanata North Councillor that has been delegated back to the KBCA, so we are working with the City of Ottawa Planner (Lisa Stern) and Developer's Planner (FoTenn), for a public, online meeting (Zoom or Microsoft Teams) the 3rd or 4th week in November. An update on the date/time will be posted in the next week or so.
The KBCA has been consulting with our professional Planner, Dennis Jacobs, and his feedback is that within the existing (vs the new/2021) Official Plan (which has been revised in the last 5 years) this proposal is permitted and will most likely be approved given approval for similar applications throughout Ottawa in recent years.
However, that does not prevent the community from asking for changes, including reshaping or moving the location of the building.
The published deadline for comments is Nov 26, but the City Planner will accept comments through December.
For more details, the entire documentation package can be downloaded from Weeping Willow 2021.zip or individually from the City of Ottawa Dev Apps site D01-02-21-0121. Note the best document to start with is the Planning Rationale.
