Beaverbrook’s Thursday Park Night
Since May 2013, Beaverbrook families have been meeting on Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 7:30pm for active play and social time for kids and parents.  Spring, Summer and early Fall the group meets at Stephen Leacock playground or an alternative nearby playground.  When the weather gets chilly the beginning of November we move indoors to the Beaverbrook Community Centre for a few months.  Then once the ice is ready at Stephen Leacock in early January, the group enjoys the outdoor rink – skating and hot chocolate.

Families take turns bringing snack for the kids. The little ones enjoy playtime together at the playground, while the older kids often play baseball, or tag.  Occasionally organized activities take place like “capture the flag – the kids like taking on the parents as their competition.

 Details are posted weekly on the Beaverbrook Happenings Facebook page.  This is a private group, but all families are welcome to join.  It has proven to be a great way to connect families to other groups and activities taking place across Beaverbrook and Kanata.

Local Produce and Meats available at the Community Centre

 

Julie Gourley and the Sustain Kanata North initiative have organized a number of opportunities for Beaverbrook (and all of Kanata North) to get fresh food directly from local Farmers delivered at the Beaverbrook Community Center.

  • The Good Food Box  takes monthly online orders for boxes of seasonal produce of various sizes for delivery every 3rd Wednesday Year round
  • Our Farms/Kinburn Farms and Watarah Downs provide two separate Community Supported Agriculture programs (CSA) where families can contract for a box of seasonal vegetables weekly (e.g. June to Mid Oct). For more details see (What is CSA?)
    • Our Farms/Kinburn Farms run a Tuesday Farmers market at the West entrance to the Beaverbrook mall from 3:30PM to 6:30PM which includes CSA pickup for their program, plus retail seasonal produce (e.g. kale, Swiss chard, lettuce, baby beets, turnips and rhubarb) and lamb to buy directly.
    • Waratah Downs CSA pickup is on Wednesdays

The City of Ottawa is proposing to replace the current 1 meter pathway on the north side of Campeau between Knudson and Teron

with a 3 meter multiuse path able to accommodate both pedestrians and bicycles.

They are looking for feedback by July 8, 2016.

Survey requests went out via the KBCA web site, email lists, the KBCA Facebook page and the Beaverbrook Happenings Facebook page (which is managed by the Beaverbrook Thursday Night Family group). The majority of feedback was through the Beaverbrook Happenings Facebook page.

I would summarize the feedback as follows:

  • Many who would consider registering are not seeing the programs they want or other reasons in 2016 as to why they won’t be registering without changes to the programs and times offered.
  • Parents were looking for options for afternoons, evenings and weekends
  • Time Spread between classes for parents with 3 kids (2 to 3 years apart) is much longer than in previous years
  • Split level classes were suggested to:
    • Shorten the overall time spent by a parent at the pool with 3 kids
    • Possibly offer a wider variety of levels/classes
  • Concentrated classes – say an hour a day for 5 days vs 30 min a day over two weeks – were mentioned as a preferred option to allow other weeks for summer camps, etc.
  • Many parents are not aware the pool exists (community facilities problem – something the KBCA needs to address) as witnessed by a number of parents noting that they had been in the community for a few years and did not realize the pool existed.

The KBCA has been hearing concerns from Families with young children about the lack of Children’s Swim Programs offered at the Beaverbrook Outdoor Pool behind the Beaverbrook Mall.

The KBCA has had discussions with the Directory for the Beaverbrook Pool who works out of the Richcraft Recreation Centre on Innovation Drive.

We are working together to see what the actual demand is for Children’s Swim Programs for the Summer of 2016 and beyond.

The reality is that enrollment at the Beaverbrook pool has been dropping year over year and the City of Ottawa cannot afford to offer Programs without sufficient enrollment. In other words, they need a commitment before they hire instructors for the Summer.
