The KBCA is looking to enlist a community volunteer to oversee the design of a logo celebrating the 50th anniversary of Beaverbrook.  Working with a student from the Graphic Design program at Algonquin College, this person will provide oversight and input throughout the design process.  The ideal candidate will have a professional marketing background and an understanding of the history of Beaverbrook.  If you are interested in this unique opportunity which would start in early January, please contact Rob McAulay, This email address is being protected from spambots. Residents of Kanata’s Beaverbrook community are invited to kick off 50th anniversary celebrations at a New Year’s Levee, Sunday January 11th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Beaverbrook Community Centre, 2 Beaverbrook Road.

As many of you know, Beaverbrook is 50 years old in 2015. Weather permitting, two outdoor skating rinks should be in operation by mid-December, according to Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association President Neil Thomson. The rinks will be located behind Stephen Leacock School on Leacock drive and at Roland Michener School on Penfield Drive.

“Once again, First Kanata Scouts will maintain these two rinks for public enjoyment,” said Thomson. A weekend family skating hour on Saturday and Sunday afternoons will be one of the features this winter.

The Community Association will mark the start of Kanata’s 50th anniversary year with a New Year’s Levee Sunday January 4th from two to four P. M. in the Beaverbrook Community Centre at 2 Beaverbrook Road. Councillor Marianne Wilkinson, Kanata builder Bill Teron and his wife Jean have been invited to join members of the KBCA Executive in exchanging greetings and best wishes for the New Year with Beaverbrook residents, including some of the original home buyers who moved into the new community in 1965.

“What Bill Teron did in designing and building Beaverbrook is a remarkable achievement, and it remains a beautiful, family-friendly community, said Thomson. “Children who grew up in Beaverbrook have been moving back to this community with their own families.”

In February, KBCA will host a week-long winter carnival on its two outdoor rinks from February 8 to 16, ending on Family Day. The carnival will include a daily family skating hour, an inter-cluster snowman competition and an outdoor performance by members of the March Kanata Skating Club. Carnival Chairman Jim Shearon is appealing for volunteers to help with the events and to help plan the 50th Anniversary Mayfair later in the year.

Residents of Kanata’s Beaverbrook community are invited to kick off 50th anniversary celebrations at a New Year’s Levee, Sunday January 4th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Beaverbrook Community Centre, 2 Beaverbrook Road.

City councillor Marianne Wilkinson, Beaverbrook founders Bill and Jean Teron and members of the community association executive will be joined by groups that provide programs in the community centre to exchange greetings and memories with former and current residents, including several families who have lived in Beaverbrook since the very beginning in 1965. 

KBCA President Neil Thomson said there will be a display of photos and newspaper clippings of the early days of Beaverbrook, loaned by Ted and Dot Smale who moved to Tiffany Place in August 1965. The Smale family moved to Beaverbrook in the same week that Ted’s employer, Atomic Energy of Canada, Commercial Products Division, started operation as the first company in Teron’s Kanata North industrial park.

The Beaverbrook New Year’s Levee will feature a family movie, Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates, starting at 2:30 in the main room upstairs. Refreshments will be served including a non-alcoholic holiday punch and a spiced, hot apple drink. “Everyone is invited and we hope to see a lot of people at the New Year`s Levee,” said Neil Thomson.
